Ogonis threaten to pull out of peace talks with Shell

THERE are indications that the Ogonis would pull out of the proposed peace parley between them and Shell being facilitated by a Presidential Committee headed by Rev. Father Mathew Kukah.
In a letter to Kukah by the National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP), they blamed the collapse of the peace talk on alleged move by Shell to penetrate the rank of the Ogoni and cause division and bitterness among them.
Information available to NYCOP indicates that Shell in a desperate effort to undermine consistent resistance against her interest in Ogoni area, is embarking on indecent means and surreptitious move to sway local resolve.
Although the development is not surprising to us, but the fact is that Shell ignores the implications, more especially, now that efforts are being made to reconcile the parties, and that shows that Shell is not interested in the peace initiative.

NYCOP, therefore, expressed profound disappointment and outrage at reports of renewed attempt by Shell to destabilize Ogoni communities again. NYCOP is also appalled by the consistent provocative approach by Shell to the Ogoni communities. Shell must bear in mind that peace and stability are an essential pre requisite for any business to succeed

Based on this unkempt development and under_ hand behaviour of Shell to the Ogoni people, NYCOP is forced to write and ask you to withdraw from the reconciliation committee as Shell is not interested in any peace initiative and a committee headed by you
