Militia Group Declares Nigeria Unsafe For Third Term Politicians

If the threats by the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) are anything to go by, then proponents of the third term – including governors legislators – may no longer be safe anywhere in the country.
In a statement made available to The Guardian yesterday, spokesman of the NDPVF, Umar Suku-Amachree, who described the tenure extension idea as grotesque and an attempt to force President Olusegun Obasanjo on Nigerians as a life president, declared:
“The ghoul of this betrayal has reinvigorated into a new era of revolutionary resistance. We will wait for them in the streets, in their pleasure houses and hideouts, in their places of worship, in their houses and so on. We will strike at them like lightening and bring them to pay for the betrayal of their people and nation.”
Suku-Amachree accused the president, governors, and legislators of dashing the hopes of Nigerians since the return of civil rule in 1999. By canvassing for tenure extension, NDPVF said, the politicians had refused to show respect for the electorate they ought to serve.
The group, whose leader, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, is facing treason trial, warned that failure to heed and adhere to its advice to shun support for the third term campaign would be met with very dire consequences. He added that the group stands with the vast majority of Nigerian people who are opposed to the project.
“We the Ijaws and Niger Delta people have come to realise the treacherous nature of our so-called political elite who dress themselves in the garb of leaders of our people. Their actions and antecedents have betrayed them. Today, we are faced with an arrested political, economic and social development in Ijaw and Niger Delta territories, courtesy of these so-called political elite,” he said.
He described those supporting the third project as same people who castigated Asari when he alleged that the former Bayelsa State Governor, DSP Alamieyeseigha, was fretting away the state’s funds. According to him, today these same political elite have betrayed, abandoned and deserted him.
