Governor’s SA residence up for auction

Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, the disgraced Nigerian governor of the Bayelsa states private residence in South Africa is up for auction

The R9m (US$1.2m) penthouse at the V & A Waterfront in Cape Town is believed to have been bought with money siphoned from the Nigerian government. The governor earns US$1000/month but owns properties in excess of US$10m across the world. He is currently in jail awaiting trial for money laundering and corruption.

He was arrested at Heathrow airport in Britain in September last year as he returned from a surgical procedure in Germany. He was found with more than one million pounds in one of his flats in London. He however managed to escape from Britain disguised as a woman. He was later arrested by Nigerian authorities after being stripped of his immunity by the Bayelsa state parliament.

According to a report in South Africas Sunday Times, Alamieyeseighas house is fitted with five plasma-screen televisions, underfloor heating, a sound system worth half a million rands and expensive Italian furniture. The flat also boasts three en-suite bedrooms, two lounges, a designer kitchen, an entertainment room and a private pool. It is due for auction in November.

According to the Sunday Times, the flat was attached early this year after South Africas Asset Asset Forfeiture Unit applied to the Cape High Court. This came after a request from the Nigerian government. The flat is said to have been bought with money Alamieyeseigha fraudulently awarded himself through a secondary company he owned.
