Obasanjo facing 127 offences

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has found himself in hot water after lawmakers from both chambers of the national assembly accused him of 127 impeachable offences.

Controversy has rocked the Nigerian Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as lawmakers in both chambers of the National Assembly are reported to have slated an impeachment motion against President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Assembly sources said that 127 impeachable offences were to be laid against the president with signature collection said to have reached an advanced stage in the House of Representatives.

Among the constitutional breaches allegedly listed against the president, was that of a $250 million defence contract from Israel which was given without authorisation from the ministry of defence.

Lawmakers reported that the contract was awarded without compliance with due process, while it was also reportedly inflated by $100 million.

The president was also accused of withdrawing several million dollars from the excess crude oil account without the authorisation of the national assembly.

As part of the new plot, those behind the move against the president were reported to have revived the Abdul Ningi committee which created to probe impeachable offences said to have been committed by the president.

The committee set up following the filing of an impeachment motion last year by some lawmakers over an issue the anti-presidency forces have vowed to re-open.

Reports of various impeachment offences levelled against the president since 1999 in both chambers were being added to the newly planned motion reportedly scheduled for this week.

It was learnt that the move against the president was prompted by reported plans of the presidency to clamp down on some leaders of the PDP who fought the president his plans to serve a third term in office.

Within the presidency there are said to be people who allegedly pencilled in the names of eight members of the House and six senators for suspension as a punishment for their roles in the killing of the third term bill.

According to sources, one of the conditions for peace is the removal of Dr. Ahmadu Ali, Tony Anenih, Ojo Maduekwe, Bode George and Professor Jerry Gana from leadership positions within the party.

When contacted for his comments, the spokesperson for the PDP, John Odey, refused to pass any comments other than, I dont respond to rumours.
