Nigerian drivers set to hit Portugal for Grand Prix

There were clear signs that Nigerians will participate in the next Grand Prix taking place in Portugal between November 22 and 26.

Abdulraheem Olu Agunbiade, President, Automobile Sport Club of Nigeria and Managing Director, He Emenga Grand Prix hinted this while test-driving the new machines brought into the country at the Tafawa Balewa main square, Lagos.

According to him, the expensive machines were imported in order to get drivers acquainted with the exact type that will be used in Portugal, stressing further that two Nigerians will be chosen at a series that will come up in July.

“This machine is called ROTAX Max 125 series. It is the machine that will be used in Portugal and because we want our drivers to get used to it now, we have taken time to purchase a few ones and shipped them into Nigeria. Each of them cost $5 000 but the amount is worth it when you consider the honour it will bring to Nigeria and the black race in event of a Nigerian winning.

“We have intensified training for our people and by now, some of them are on 180 to 200 kilometres per hour. There will be a series in July that will be held in several centres around Nigeria. The aim is for all drivers to hit above 200 kilometres per hour mark because that will be the standard in Portugal. Two people will be chosen to represent Nigeria at the event. Winners in Portugal will get free entry to partake in Formula 3000 and from there unto Formula one.”
