Was football game fixed?

Nigerian soccer officials are investigating how a league team that scored only 12 goals in 14 games scored 13 in the last game of the season to win promotion.

Akwa United beat Calabar Rovers 13-0 on August 12 to gain promotion to the Premier League ahead of rival Bussdor. Bussdor would have been promoted had United scored any fewer goals.

Bussdor complained the referee had sent off three Rovers players, including the goalkeeper, and the league has set up a committee to look into the affair.

“The committee will probe a petition from Bussdor saying the match was fixed to enable Akwa United to gain promotion,” Nigerian Professional League executive secretary Salifu Abubakar said.

In March, the head of the Nigerian Football Association caused a stir when he told referees they could take bribes but should still be fair.
