The Management of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria Plc (PHCN) said yesterday that there will be lose of about 800 megawatt (mw) of electrify from the national grid, saying Nigerian should brace up for load shedding.
A statement signed by management of PHCN and sent to our correspondent in Abuja yesterday, said the develo-pment follows a notice from the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC) to shut down gas supply to Egbin Power Station which produces the bulk of Nigerian power.
The statement reads: “The shut down will result to loss of 800mw from the national grid. This is coming at a time when power supply has began to stabilize nationwide thereby eliciting commendation from Nigerians.
“In view of this, we have no alternative than to start load shedding again. The load shed-ding is due to factors entirely outside our control and we deeply regret the inconve-nience to our customers.
“As soon as gas supply to Egbin power station is restored power supply quality will stabilize,” the statement said.
Nigeria has an installed power generation capacity of 6000 mw, but produces around 1500mw before 1999.
But from 1999 till date, the PHCN said that government has ploughed in N651 billion into building new power infrastructure and rehabilita-tion of new ones.
However, the country still produces 1800 mw.
