Police, bank chiefs to meet over robbers� attacks

Worried by the spate of attacks on banks in the state, the Rivers State Police Command and top officials of commercials banks will soon meet to map out strategies to end the robbers� onslaught.

The Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr. Felix Ogbaudu, told our correspondent in Port Harcourt, that the meeting became imperative owing to recent bank robberies in the state.

The action followed raids on three banks by gunmen in Omoku and Port Harcourt on Thursday and Friday, during which four persons were shot dead and N7.5m carted from the Omoku bank by the robbers.

Although the gunmen could not break into the bank, they shot dead two naval personnel and a civilian as well as injured two other naval men.

The police killed two of the gunmen but their bodies were taken away by the gang who escaped through the creeks.

He said, �The meeting is basically to work out ways of assisting the banks. But we have also put our men on the alert following the renewed attacks in the state by hoodlums.�

The CP did not, however, disclose the venue, date and time of the meeting.

Ogbaudu assured that he would protect the identity of informants.

The CP said, �The police have always been accused of divulging information to criminals. I want to assure that such a thing will never happen again. Members of the public can from now on give us information and conceal their identities.�

The police boss advised people with useful information that could assist the police to avail the law enforcement agents with such information to save the people from the threat of hoodlums.

The commissioner said kidnapping was not something that the police could contain alone and called on the natives of the state to volunteer information on those behind the evil deal to the security agencies.
