Police Arrest 155 MASSOB Members

Police have launched a massive raid on all council areas in Anambra State.

In the raid, a total of 155 people suspected to be members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) were arrested.

Speaking on the arrest, the state Police Commissioner, John Haruna, said the raid was successful because of the proactive security measures put in place by the command. He added that items recovered from the suspects included eight locally-made double and short guns, one double barrel gun cut to size and 19 life cartridges.

“The raid was made simultaneously in all the communities and local government areas in Anambra which is part of our proactive actions against the menace of hoodlums and robbers in the state. We still have other plans to execute and I guarantee you that we shall record more results,” he said.

Similarly, Haruna announced that a total of 397 motorcycles without registration numbers were recovered from fleeing miscreants. He said the motorcycles were suspected to have been used for armed robbery operations in parts of the state.

The police boss stated that most of the motorcycles were recovered from major commercial towns and communities on the fringe of the towns during the raid and that nobody had come to claim them.

The commissioner, however, refuted claims that his recent visit to the State House of Assembly was based on summons by the lawmakers. He said the legislators had earlier paid him a courtesy visit, which he reciprocated. He added that the meeting was aimed at improving the working relationship between the command and the Assembly.

Haruna disclosed that a bill jointly sponsored by the command, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the legislature and the State Security Service on the regulation of commercial motorcycle operations in the state is presently before the House.
