Pirates Abduct Six Sailors Off Bonny Island

The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) says six sailors have been abducted by Pirates off Nigeria’s oil-rich south.

According to the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre, the sailors were aboard a small oil tanker, before they were attacked.

The Apecus, a Palau-flagged petroleum products tanker of 3,100 deadweight tonnes, was attacked on Friday as it was anchored off Bonny Island.

The IMB says it has notified the Nigerian Navy of the attack and an investigation has been launched into the incident.

Meanwhile, the Navy is yet to officially issue a statement on the development.

Nigeria has been a hotspot for piracy incidents over the past decade. The country reported 14 pirate attacks for the first quarter of 2019, compared to 22 in the same period in 2018.
