Nigeria slams US for failing to sell it arms

Nigeria has slammed the United States for refusing to sell it the weapons needed to defeat Boko Haram militants.

Washington has banned arms sales to Nigeria because of alleged human rights violations in the crackdown on Islamist extremists.

Nigeria’s ambassador to Washington Adebowale Adefuye says allegations of human rights violations by his country’s military are exaggerated, rumours and hearsay.

He says Nigeria’s leadership is not satisfied with the scope, nature and content of US support for its struggle against terrorists.

His speech to the Council on Foreign Relations was posted on the Nigerian embassy website on the same day that President Goodluck Jonathan announced he would stand again for re-election, vowing to defeat Boko Haram.

A small team of US military and State Department advisors has been in Nigeria for months seeking to help track down some 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram in mid-April.
