Mobil Resumes Production After Protest

Work has finally resumed at Exxon Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN) facilities in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom State after a violent demonstration on May 2 by angry youths where two persons were feared dead.
A factional irate youths from Mkpanak embarked on a violent demonstration holding MPN workers hosatage for hour before they were dispersed by Naval personnel from the Eastern Naval Command, Calabar.
The Naval men who were brought in following a distressed call tried to make some entreaties to stop the rampaging youths which proved abortive and as a result, the Naval Personnel were forced to open fire to scare the militant youths and in the process two of the Mkpanak youths were feared dead while four others were injured.
In a press release made available to THISDAY, and signed by an official of MPN, Mr. Femi Fakayejo, said “there was a demonstration at the Qua Iboe Terminal late in the afternoon on May 2 and security authorities responded (but) we have no information as regards possible casualties associated with the incident”.
He equally confirmed that “during the time production was curtailed briefly but has now been returned to normal levels (and) appropriate security measures are effected. The safety of our employees and contractors is a top priority”.
Fakayejo further stated that “we (MPN) are working with the community to address their areas of concern (as) MPN encourages resolution of issues through dialogues”.
Last weekend about 15 youths from Mkpanak had forced themselves offshore protesting against unemployment of their qualified youths by MPN but through pressure and persuasions the 15 youths were forced to leave the Globestar platform offshore.
THISDAY gathered that suddenly another group of six youths from Mkpanak led by their president, Mr. Cyril John went back to the Globestar and refused to leave despite persuasions as they were alleged to have demanded for money.They were however arrested and brought to Calabar by Naval Personnel.
