Group renews ultimatum to oil firms

An Itsekiri group, Iwere Development Association, on Monday asked oil multinationals and service companies to leave its area in Delta State latest by March 23.

The IDA, which last week issued a 21-day ultimatum asking the oil firms to leave Itsekiri area, said the deadline should not be treated with levity.

The group said it was ready to carry out unspecified far-reaching actions as from March 23rd when the ultimatum expires.

The IDA, an umbrella body for Itsekiri youths group, in a statement signed by its President, Mr. Omolubi Mewuwumi, urged oil operators to comply strictly with the order.

Mewuwumi renewed its warning to all foreign embassies in the country to withdraw their nationals from oil-producing communities in Itsekiri area of the state and warned against divide-and-rule tactics by the management of the oil firms.

Specifically, Mewuwumi accused the multinationals of sponsoring a faceless Itsekiri group to issue a counter publication against the ultimatum of IDA, adding that those behind the group were not representing the interests of the Itsekiri ethnic nationality.
