The severe fuel crisis that has hit Nigeria in the last two weeks is threatening to have a negative impact on Africa’s largest economy.
Though Nigeria ranks as one of the top 10 oil producers in the world, the country has had to rely on imports to meet its massive domestic needs.
The current fuel crisis has been blamed on importers accused of withholding petrol because of a subsidy payment dispute with the government, which they have denied.
Some angry motorists told Eyewitness News that they had gone to the petrol station on several occasions but were turned away.
“It was not a good experience, this scarcity, because I left my house very early in the morning to join the queues and still I have not received oil.”
Another motorists said some people slept at the petrol station.
“Many of us have been here since this morning. Some people have slept here.”
Some have called on government to control the crisis as some stations are selling oil at different prices.
Ibe Kachikwu, the Minister for State for Petroleum Resources, said they should give all products to customers for free.
He went on to say they’d impose strict penalties on stations that do not abide by regulations.
