Ex-president Jonathan back home after ‘self-exile’

Former president Goodluck Jonathan is back in the country after spending weeks in the United Kingdom and Cote d’Ivoire.

Reports in May indicated that Jonathan may have gone into temporary self-exile following reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes (EFCC) could arrest him over allegations of corruption and misappropriation of billions of dollars during his term of office.

Jonathan, however, according to Vanguard, quickly dismissed the reports, insisting that he was not on self-exile in Cote d’Ivoire as alleged.

“I am not in exile; it is quite unfortunate that anybody is insinuating that I am in exile. I am now a private citizen. Since I left office, this is my second second visit to Cote d’Ivoire,” Jonathan was quoted as saying at the time.

Punch reported on Thursday that the former president arrived at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Wednesday before heading for his country home in Otuoke, Bayelsa State.

One of his associates reportedly confirmed that he was back home.

“I have spoken with the ex-president and he said that he had returned to the country,” he was quoted as saying.
