Espionage: Judith Asuni knows fate today

Nigerian-American Niger Delta activist, Dr (Mrs.) Judith Asuni, who is under trial with three others on allegations of espionage, will know her fate today as the Federal High Court, Abuja, gives a ruling on her application for bail.

Justice Binta Nyako last week adjourned the case to today after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defence counsel on the application of Dr Asuni and her Nigerian employee, Danjuma Saidu, for bail.

The two other accused who are Germans have been granted bail. Director of Prosecution, Alhaji Aliyu Saidu, had objected to Dr Asunis application for bail on the grounds that she and Saidu allegedly possessed information that could jeopardise investigation into the matter.

However, the defence counsel had argued that the claims of the prosecution counsel were untenable because the counsel had not been able to produce specific evidence that indicts Dr Asuni of the allegations leveled against her.

The trial of Dr Asuni has recorded some twists since her arrest four weeks ago.

At the first appearance in court, the prosecution claimed that she was not a Nigerian but illegally possessed the Nigerian passport.

However, media reports had quoted particulars of her naturalisation as a Nigerian in 2004 with a Certificate of Naturalisation/Registration signed by the then Minister of Internal Affairs, Dr Iyorcha Ayu.

At the last hearing of the case last week, the prosecution conceded that she had, indeed, naturalized.
