At least nine people were killed and 24 injured in two explosions in the city of Maiduguri, in northeastern Nigeria on Saturday, according to the country’s National Emergency Agency (NEMA).
Pictures posted on NEMA’s Twitter account show rescue workers at the scene of the bombing, amid debris and destroyed cars.
“Emergency workers have evacuated the injured to hospital,” said the tweet.
The terror group Boko Haram is suspected of carrying out the attacks, according to statements from Maiduguri military chief Brig. Gen. Victor Ezeogwu, and NEMA’s northeast region head Mohammed Kanar.
“There were two suicide attacks this morning, one of which targeted the Bakassi IDP (internally displaced persons) camp,” said Kanar.
“The bomber detonated his explosives just outside the gates where people had gathered for their daily buying and selling activities.”
