Amos Adamu, the disgraced official of world soccer’s governing body FIFA, was quizzed by the anti-graft Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Wednesday for alleged mismanagement of billions of naira earmarked for Nigeria’s hosting of the 2003 All-Africa Games.
Adamu, who is serving a three-year suspension by FIFA over his alleged role in the vote-for-cash scandal ahead of the selection of the host cities for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, is also being investigated over the scandal.
According to local media reports Thursday, Adamu’s international passport was impounded by the EFCC, which grilled him for several hours in Abuja, the Nigerian capital..
‘So far, we have confronted him with these issues and he is explaining his role and the extent of his involvement,’ an EFCC official was quoted as saying.
‘We are, however, going to release him on administrative bail. But from time to time, we will always quiz him on isolated clues,’ the source said.
On 19 Oct, EFCC chair Farida Waziri named a five-man panel to probe Adamu, who allegedly demanded US$800,000from undercover reporters to vote for a certain country bidding for the 2018 World Cup.
Adamu has declared his innocence over the vote-for-scandal issue and has appealed against the FIFA sanctions.
