Wilbros scandal: FG seeks evidence from US

The Federal Government on Monday in Abuja said it has demanded evidence from the United States of America over Nigerians named in the Wilbros bribery scandal.

It accused the US of shielding the identity of officers of Shell Development Producing Company (SDPC) indicted on the matter.

The government also explained its refusal to accede to the request of the Metropolitan Police on the trial of former Delta State governor, Chief James Ibori, saying that the request was procedurally wrong.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Michael Aondoakaa (SAN), who briefed journalists said that the briefing was aimed putting issues in clear perspectives.

He also disclosed that another 300,000 pounds had been recovered from the money allegedly laundered by former Plateau governor, Chief Joshua Dariye, saying that the cheque would be handed over to the state Attorney General today.

The minister also denied allegations that his office was trying to shield the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Patricia Etteh, from trial over her alleged indictment in a contract scandal.

He said that he had gone to the US in company of the Minister of State for Energy, Chief Odein Ajumogobia (SAN), to request that they be permitted to look into the evidence in the scandal to assist in the investigation.

Aondoakaa said that the case was more of a police matter and the EFCC had gone into it to establish the truth about the allegations.
