Violence spreads to Katsina

Despite the military action to rout them out, the Boko Haram followers extended their wave of attacks to Katsina State yesterday where they raided the Divisional Police Station in Danja Local Government Area wounding a policeman.

No life was lost in the incident, which happened in the early hours of yesterday when a gang of armed youths stormed the police station.

Police officers in the station repelled the attack, forcing the sect members to flee and abandon petrol with which they planned to burn the building.

The police arrested some of the attackers, though no official statement was made as to the number of those arrested.

Deputy Commissioner of Police in Katsina Mr Abdulmajid Ali, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent in Katsina, said the police were still awaiting comprehensive report about the nature of the attack and possible causalities from the divisional police officer in charge of the area.

Ali said as a result of the attack stakeholders held a security meeting and initiated measures to check the sect’s activities and prevent them from attacking other areas in the state.

He said the command was on red alert and had resolved to guard all places vulnerable to attack and mounted road blocks on the routes leading into the state.

He said the security meeting which was also attended by the state governor resolved to place a ban on all commercial motor bikes (popularly known as okada) from operating between 10:30pm and 6am so as to restrict movement during the night.
