(AP) _ A private security official says gunmen in Nigeria’s southern oil region have hijacked an oil-services boat with 13 people onboard, including five expatriate workers.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to company prohibitions on speaking to the media. The official said the Tuesday hijacking took place on a river in the southern Niger Delta oil region but had no further details and did not know the nationalities of the five foreigners.
A military spokesman was not immediately available for comment and a naval spokeswoman was not aware of any incident. Hijackings and kidnappings are common in Nigeria’s restive southern region. Kidnap victims are generally released unharmed after a ransom is paid.
