The U.S. ambassador to Nigeria says his nation is offering support to the West African nation’s fight against a radical Islamist sect, but ruled out sending troops to a country vital to American energy supplies.
Ambassador Terence P. McCulley told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday in Lagos that the FBI already sent a bomb expert to Nigeria to help the nation as it deals with explosives set by the Boko Haram sect.
McCulley also says the U.S. has improved intelligence-sharing with Nigeria after security and intelligence failures allowed Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab onto a U.S.-bound flight that he attempted to bring down with a bomb in 2009.
However, asked if the U.S. would be willing to send troops in the country, McCulley said: “That’s not on the table. No. Absolutely not.”
