U .S. Consulate General, Lagos
Warden Message
December 8, 2006
Parts of Nigeria have often experienced and increase in crime during the holiday season. Lagos and other large cities are among those areas usually affected. Even Victoria and Ikoyi islands, which are generally safer than other parts of Lagos, experience more crime, including armed robberies and carjackings, during this period of the year.
In addition, party primaries to choose candidates for the forthcoming April elections are planned for December in various state capitals. These primaries are often occasioned by large crowds. These activities carry with them the likelihood of traffic delay as well as the possibility of disturbances. Americans resident in or visiting Nigeria are therefore advised to avoid crowds, demonstrations, political rallies, and other large gatherings. As at other times, the ability of the U.S. government to assist Americans in the event of disturbances or unrest is limited.
The Consulate continues to advise Americans should review their security procedures, remain vigilant to their surroundings, and report specific incidences of targeted violence to the U.S. Consulate in Lagos at 01-261-0050. You may also email the Lagos Consular Section at lagoscons2@state.gov.
Americans are encouraged to read the Department of States August 24, 2006 Travel Warning regarding travel to Nigeria (available online at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_928.html) and the Worldwide Caution announcement released on June 6, 2006 (available online at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_1161.html).
