Over the last few weeks, expatriates have been the target of various acts of violent crime in Lagos. These crimes include carjacking, muggings, assaults, and burglaries. The U.S. Consulate General Lagos is recommending that all Americans exercise due caution while traveling in Lagos, including Ikoyi and Victoria Islands.
Based on the locations of some of these crimes, we recommend that particular roadways and intersections be avoided to the extent possible during the hours of darkness. These areas include:
1. AMHADU BELLO WAY (BAR BEACH ROAD)
2. LEKKI EXPRESSWAY (Beyond the Palms Plaza)
3. AWOLOWO ROAD (Underneath the Falomo Bridge)
During recent political rallies in different areas of the city, there have been incidents of violence and property destruction. Some of these political gatherings also have caused severe traffic congestion and delays. Although expatriates have not been specifically targeted in these disturbances, Americans should avoid large public gatherings and demonstrations due to the possibility that they and their vehicles may inadvertently be placed in harm�s way. American citizens should maintain a high level of security awareness at all times when traveling in any part of the city.
