Nigerian authorities say they have arrested a North Carolina woman who they suspect may be part of a counterfeit check ring.
A spokesman for Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says 24-year-old Sharon Denis Thorpe of Raleigh, N.C., was arrested Saturday as she attempted to board a flight to the U.S. The spokesman says Thorpe was carrying more than $760,000 worth of fake checks.
The spokesman says authorities believe the woman’s fiance is the mastermind of the check scheme, but that he has yet to be found.
The spokesman says investigators continue to interrogate Thorpe.
