UN body assesses demolition in Rivers

The United Nations Habitat commission in Nigeria has dispatched a four-man delegation to assess the urban renewal initiative of the Governor Chibuike Amaechi administration in Rivers State.

Head of the Nigeria office of UN Habitat commission, Professor Johnson Bade Falade, who led three other members on the assessment tour, said the team is in the state to review the urban renewal programme of the government based on the numerous petitions sent to the commission by victims of the demolition exercise carried out by the state government.

“Based on the plethora of petitions and agitations which the National Union of Tenants, Port-Harcourt branch, reportedly sent to the United Nations Habitat office in Abuja, are here to ascertain the true situation of things as regards the current demolition exercise of some settlements in Port Harcourt by the ministry of urban development.
