Total Locks Out Threatenes 250,000 bpd Crude

The 250,000 barrels of crude oil produced by Total/Elf Oil Company is under threat following a standoff between the company and its over 2,000 employees
The workers, under the aegies of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and Petroleum & Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), are protesting Total�s condition of service.
In response to their agitation, the management of the company yesterday locked out the workers.
Fred Ohwawa, Total�s spokesman, said the company�s management decided to shut its gate for people to stay at home yesterday so as to forestall break down of law and order.
According to him, there has been an unresolved issue of staff appraissal for last year performance, which did not go down well with some employees.
THISDAY however gathered that some of the workers are aggrieved because the company is yet to formalize their appointment, which will entitle them to terminal benefits.
The workers who thronged the front gate of the Total at Trans Amadi, Port Harcourt followed the locking of the gate by the management of the company at about 5am and only allowed few senior officers of the company to go into the complex.
