South Africa: Nigeria Prompted Raid On MEND Leader’s Home

The Nigerian government allegedly prompted South African police forces to invade the Johannesburg home of Henry Okah, leader of militant group Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Next news agency reported Oct. 1. The request came after an alleged intelligence report indicating planned MEND attacks in Abuja, Nigeria. More than 30 police officers, armed with sophisticated weaponry and police dogs, entered Okah’s home at 3 a.m. local time, an unnamed source said. Okah has been accused of exporting arms and explosives from South Africa, but after 10 hours of searching the police could not find any evidence to support those accusations, the source said.
