The last of the oil platforms taken over by irate Kula youths in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State-Ekulema 2, was vacated in the early hours of Tuesday.
The youths left the oil platform following an all-night meeting held with them by a special team raised by the government to mediate in the crisis and resume oil production.
The youths swooped on the oil facilities last Wednesday, accusing the oil companies of not giving them non-skilled jobs, which they could execute to stem unemployment in the community.
They also alleged that the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding sealed between them and the oil firms had been violated and should be implemented to the letter.
However, a special team, known as the Niger Delta Crisis Management and Conflict Resolution Committee, said to be headed by the Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr. Tonye Harry, is said to have mediated in the face-off and secured an undertaking from both parties to keep to the terms of the MoU.
Under the agreement said to have been struck on Monday night, the oil companies were given three weeks to implement demands put forward by the community and report back to the committee.
Dan Opusinji, the spokesman for Kula community, said on Tuesday that the community had in obedience to the governments directive, vacated the last platform and would wait until the expiration of the deadline.
Opusinji said, We have left Ekulema 2 platform this morning and we are going to abide by the terms given by the committee on Niger Delta. But if the oil companies fail to do what they have been asked to do, we shall not hesitate to take over the flow stations.
