Security beefed up in capital after Jos violence

Nigerian authorities have increased the level of security in the capital city of Abuja, to forestall a spillover of the violence that rocked the northern city of Jos Sunday, following reprisal attacks over the Christmas Eve explosions that left 32 dead and 74 injured.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Bala Mohammed, said in a statement that about 1000 ‘informants’ had been deployed in different parts of the FCT, while the police and other security agencies had stepped up their surveillance of the territory.

Also, the statement said security had been strengthened in churches, mosques, markets, social spots and other public places.

Ethno-religious crisis, which has been occurring intermittently in Plateau state – of which Jos is capital – has a way of reverberating in others parts of the country.
