A gang of armed robbers attacked another commercial bank in Matori area of Lagos in the early hours of Sunday.
This attack came barely a week after robbers raided four banks in the same area. However, no life was lost in the attacks.
It was learnt that the robbers, armed with sophisticated weapons, got to the bank at about 1am in two buses.
The robbers, our correspondent gathered, cut their way through into the banking hall and located the vault.
Their attempt to open the vault, according to a source, was frustrated because it was a very strong old vault.
After toiling for about two hours on the vault and there was no positive result, the robbers, in annoyance, began to shoot around.
They fired gunshots at almost everything they could destroy in the bank, including the glasses and other equipment.
The source said some policemen later arrived on the scene and there ensued a hot exchange of gunshots.
While the robbers were firing back at the police, they also reportedly made spirited attempt at retreating.
They eventually managed to jump into their waiting buses and escaped.
The spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Olubode Ojajuni, a deputy superintendent of police, could not confirm the incident on Sunday.
He said he was yet to be briefed that there was an attack on the bank. There are minor incidents around the city but I have not heard of any major incident on Sunday, Ojajuni said.
He added, I will make enquiries and if I find out that what you are saying is right, I will let you know. But now, I have not confirmed the robbery attack.
