Rivers pulls down shanties

Ahead of President Olusegun Obasanjo�s visit to Rivers State on Tuesday, the state government on Sunday began the demolition of illegal structures along the major routes in the state capital.

The officials of the state Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, assisted by riot policemen, carried out the demolition on Sunday afternoon.

The demolition squad headed by the Director of Urban Re-Orientation in the state, Dr. Enoch Onyeche, was sighted pulling down illegal structures around the ever-busy Eleme Junction.

Obasanjo is expected to pass through the junction to Iriebe in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state to inuagurate some projects undertaken by the Wife of the state governor, Justice Mary Odili, during his one-day working visit to the state on Tuesday.

The team also pulled down shanties along the Aba-Port Harcourt Road, Ikwerre Road and at the Airforce Base Junction where the President is expected to inaugurate the Airforce Base Link Road.

Also on Sunday, officials of the state administration began the resurfacing and painting of major roads in the state capital to give them a new look, as part of the preparation for the President�s visit.

The painting of the road with black and white colours coincided with the erection of street light which had been non-functional for sometime along most of the roads in the capital.

The state has already declared Tuesday a workfree day to enable the people of the state to turn out and welcome Obasanjo and also participate actively in the activities heraldingthe commencement of uninterrupted power supply in the state.
