This year’s Ramadan fast begins today. Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar. The commencement of the fast is sequel to a directive by the President-General of the Supreme Council For Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III that since the Ramadan crescent was not sighted Thursday night, Sha’aban 29, 1430 A.H, fasting can therefore not start from Friday night, 30th of Sha’aban, making the month to complete the 30 days cycle yesterday. Therefore, this year’s Sha’aban will be 30 days.
According to the Sultan during a short broadcast on Thursday, the directive is sequel to the non-sighting of the new moon of Ramadan on Thursday, across Nigeria.
“However, after all the necessary consultations with Emirs and Islamic leaders across the country, it was established that the new moon of Ramadan was not sighted anywhere in Nigeria today (Thursday).
“Therefore, the month of Shaában will complete its 30-day circle tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 21, 2009,’’ the monarch added.
According to the Sultan, “consequent upon this, Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009 becomes the first day of Ramadan 1430 AH”.
He implored Muslim Ummah to be devoted to Ibada (worship) throughout the Holy Month.
