Rainstorm wreaks havoc in Calabar

A late night rainstorm hit many families, churches and business outfits in Calabar, Cross River State, on Sunday, rendering many homeless and causing traffic snarl in some parts of the state capital.

The storm also destroyed many electric poles and cables in the city, leading to total blackout in all parts of the state capital.

Our correspondent observed on Monday that some motorists were forced to abandon their vehicles along some major roads, including the Calabar-Ikom highway, Palm Street and the portion of the road near the psychiatric hospital due to heavy flooding.

Also affected were operators of cyber cafes, whose satellite dishes were either disfigured or destroyed.

Along the Atamunu Street, the storm also pulled down some giant trees, making it impossible for motorists to have a thoroughfare. Even commercial motorcyclists had to divert to other routes.

The residents were seen clearing the road and gutters that had been filled with sand and all kinds of waste.

Although power supply in the state capital had been epileptic in recent past, Sundays rainstorm doubled the woes of electricity consumers. Nowhere in the state capital had public power supply.

The Public Relations Manager of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria for the state, Mr. Fred Obi, lamented in an interview that many equipment belonging to PHCN had been destroyed by the storm.

He said it was difficult to quantify the extent of damage to the companys facilities since officials were still going round to ascertain the level of items destroyed. He, however, assured that efforts were being made to restore power supply.
