President Goodluck Jonathan Friday launched a new national driver’s licence scheme and number plate introduced by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The move is aimed at restoring the integrity of the Nigerian driver’s licence and providing credible database of all drivers and vehicles plying the nation’s roads.
At the occasion, Jonathan charged the agency to apprehend and prosecute unauthorized users of siren on our roads, saying the new drivers licence was at the heart of the efforts to alter a culture of recklessness, impunity and lack of consideration for other road users.
Jonathan also ordered immediate removal of all tankers and trailers “recklessly and indiscriminately parked” on the nation’s highways to obstruct free flow of traffic on the highways.
The President directed the FRSC to come up with an action plan for strict enforcement of the rules, saying enforcement of road traffic rules does not exempt or accord any undue respect to positions, ranks and status of any select group of road users.
