Police station raided

An armed gang raided Bori police station in southern Rivers State and carted away arms and salaries of local government council workers, official News Agency of Nigeria (Nan) reported on Monday.

Witnesses said that the 12-member gang stormed the station at dawn on Sunday and shot sporadically to scare away policemen on duty before looting their armoury.

They also went away with funds belonging to Khana local government council, which had been kept at the station, six rifles and 20 rounds of 7.6mm ammunition, said Nan.

The council, which started paying its workers on Thursday, had left some of the unpaid salaries and other funds at the police station for safe keeping, said Nan.

“After the raid, the police recovered eight empty shells of AK-47 ammunition and three G3 rifles”, said a police source.

The criminals came from the Kaa waterside in the area and escaped with a boat.

Rivers State police spokesperson, Ireju Barasua, who confirmed the incident, said that a special police team had been deployed to the station while investigation had commenced into the crime.
