In its bid to reduce criminal activities in the Lagos metropolis, the Lagos State Police Command has impounded 553 motorcycles and arrested 1,134 suspects during routine raids.
The motorcycles were impounded and their riders charged to court for failure to comply with the state governments order directing commercial motorcycle riders not to operate beyond 10pm.
It will be observed that most of the robbery incidents recorded in Lagos were perpetrated by men on motorcycle.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, disclosed this at the commands headquarters, GRA, Ikeja on Thursday when he paraded some armed robbery suspects.
Abubakar said six bullion vans and their drivers were also arrested during the week for the abuse of siren.
The police authorities have prohibited bullion vans, other unauthorised persons and institutions from the use of siren, especially on Lagos roads.
During the week under review, the police arrested 11 armed robbery suspects, recovered nine guns and 43 pieces of live ammunition.
According to the CP, 877 of the total 1,134 suspects arrested during routine raids have been charged to court.
One of the paraded suspects, Sunday Aguda, was arrested at Allen Avenue junction last Friday for alleged involvement in counterfeiting of Nigerias currency notes.
His confession led to the arrest of two other members of the gang. Printing machine, chemical, 194 pieces of fake N1,000 notes and 50 pieces of fake N500 notes were recovered from the syndicate.
Besides, Abu Dayon, Peter Alobu, Peter Igwe, Saheed Owolabi and Ahmed Oyedele were paraded for stealing cable wires worth N1m from a company in Awosika Estate, Ikeja.
The police arrested the suspects, who were in a Volkswagen bus with registration number XC 782 BDG, within the estate in the early hours of Sunday.
Police preliminary investigation showed that three of the suspects were members of staff of the company that produced the stolen wires.
Abubakar, who gave the commissioners award of gallant performance to 14 policemen, said the command would not relent on its drive to reduce crime in the state.
