The police in Lagos have begun a clamp-down on motorcyclists operating outside approved hours in the state.
Mr Samuel Jinadu, the Lagos State Police Command spokesman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos recently that the clampdown was necessary because of the high level of crime in the metropolis.
He said that investigations revealed that violent crimes in the state were carried out with motorcycles.
He said the law banning the use of motorcycles in designated roads and within stipulated hours was still in force, adding that some have been arrested for contravening the law.
Jinadu said that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Yakubu Alkali, led a team of policemen to some major highways in the night to check the motorcyclists’ excesses.
He said that about 320 commercial motorcycles were impounded in different parts of the state while 259 suspects were arrested.
“The motorcyclists were arrested for not adhering to the order given by the state government that they are not allowed to go beyond 10 p.m. in their operations,” Jinadu said.
NAN reported that in the last one month, robbery operations were carried out in different parts of the state, resulting in the death of some people, including a Chinese who was shot dead in front of a bank in Ikeja.
