PDP wins Ondo Senate seat without fielding candidate

FOUR days after it was conducted, the results of last weekend’s National Assembly elections in Ondo State were yesterday released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Curiously, the winning streak of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continued so well in the state, that it even won a senatorial district that it did not field a candidate for.

The result of the election, released by INEC’s Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Olabimpe Awoniyi, indicated that PDP won all the seats both at the Senate and the House of Representatives.

According to a statement issued by Awoniyi, there will be a rescheduled election into Akure South state House of Assembly in Constituency 11 in the area. There will also be a rescheduled election into the Owo/Ose Federal constituency on Saturday, April 28.

The Senate result showed that Dr. Bode Olajumoke of the PDP, who polled 137,736, votes, won in Ondo North senatorial District, followed by Labour Party candidate, Prince Nekan Olateru-Olagbegi with 20,147 votes, while Mr. A.O. Abodare came third with 16,969 polls.

In Ondo Central Senatorial District, Senator Gbenga

Ogunniya of the PDP won for the third consecutive time with 184,555 polls while Labour Party candidate, Mr. P. A. Akinyelure came second with 54,087 votes.

However, in Ondo South Senatorial District, the PDP won with 318,153 votes without presenting any candidate for the election.

The Guardian learnt that the PDP may tactically forfeit the result to Labour Party candidate, Mr. Boluwaji Kunlere who came second in the area with 13,333 votes while Action Congress candidate, Mr. F. Lebi, who scored 8,906 votes, came third.

In the elections, the PDP was accused of masterminding the hijacking of ballot bags and papers in all the three senatorial districts in the state mostly at gunpoint.

The result showed that PDP won House of Representatives seats except in Owo/Ose Federal Constituency where election was cancelled by INEC due to alleged irregularities.

Those who won the House of Representatives include, Mr. Gbenga Elegbeleye of the PDP, who polled 59,743 votes in Akoko North East/Akoko North West Federal Constituency, while J. Anota scored 23,577 votes in Akoko South East/Akoko south West Federal Constituency. Also, A. C. A Adesida had 84,221 votes for the Akure North/ Akure South Federal Constituency.

Others are N. J. Akinyugha with 49,417 votes in Idanre/ Ifedore, O. E Adedeji. 66,118 votes in Ile-Oluji-Okeigbo/Odigbo, Ajayi Agboola 133,316 votes in Ese-Odo/Ilaje, O.O Olakunde 112,358 votes in Okitipupa/Irele Federal Constituency, while T. Fawehinmi of the PDP won the Ondo East/Ondo West Federal Constituency with 75,034 votes.
