THE strike action embarked upon by oil workers under the aegis of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas, NUPENG, to protest the bad state of roads in the country, high prices of diesel and petrol as well as pay rise has been suspended.
The work-to-rule action was shelved with effect from tomorrow as NUPENG agreed yesterday to suspend the strike for two weeks to see if the Federal Government would react positively to their demands.
NUPENG sources said last night that a stakeholders meeting to be attended by the union, the ministers of works, energy and labour, the Petroleum Pricing and Regulatory Agency and the inspector-general of police had been scheduled for Tuesday in Abuja to discuss the contentious issues.
The meeting, according to the sources, is expected to work out the modalities to reduce the prices of kerosene and diesel and repair of roads across the country currently in a state of disrepair.
Salary increase for NUPENG members is also said to be on the agenda of the meeting as it was reportedly agreed at yesterdays meeting that the National Association of Tanker Owners should within two weeks work out modalities for pay rise for the oil workers.
