The Defence Headquarters on Friday declared that at no time were bombs or high-calibre weapons used in the ongoing military operations in the Niger Delta. Outgoing Director of Defence Information, Colonel Chris Jemitola, who said this during his valedictory media briefing, noted that though the military had been accused of high handedness, it was obvious that they had used minimum force in the operation. Jemitola, who is leaving Defence Headquarters to Brazil as Defence Adviser, said that they had to use minimum force “because the people involved are Nigerians, while the soldiers also are Nigerians, and we are all brothers and sisters.” According to him, “what we are seeing now is not a lull in the operation, but we are seeing the use of minimum force, because we are not fighting a war in the Niger Delta, but what we are doing is protecting the national interest in the region.” |
