Nigeria to buy 4 more presidential jets

Nigeria’s federal government is to buy four more aircraft for the presidential fleet, which currently boasts of eight planes, according to the details of the 2010 federal budget.

The four new planes will cost a total of US$210 million naira, though only a part of the cost was prepared for in the budget.

Details of the new aircraft, including the type and cost of each one, were not disclosed.

The long-range Boeing Business Jet (BBJ), a Boeing 737 variant purchased during the tenure of the immediate past President Olusegun Obasanjo, is the top aircraft in the presidential fleet.

On Tuesday, President Umaru Yar’Adua submitted a 2010 budget of 4.079 trillion naira to the National Assembly (parliament) (US$1=150 Naira).
