The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) issued new security rules for the nation’s airports at the weekend.
According to a statement issued here by NCAA, the new rules were in line with global security alerts following new threats from liquid explosives.
Under the new rules, passengers will now be required to take off their coats and jackets at security posts to aid proper screening by machines, the statement said.
Sam Adurogboye, Media Assistant to the NCAA Director-General Harold Demuren, said any liquid to be allowed as hand luggage for travelers must now be put in transparent, re-sealable bags of not more than one-liter capacity per passenger and be presented for screening.
Passengers would now be required to present their coats or jackets for screening separately, to ensure that dangerous items were not smuggled into aircraft, he explained.
He said the new security laws were in the interest of safety of passengers, adding that they were an adaptation of the new laws in EU countries.
All airlines operating flights into and out of Nigeria had been told to ensure maximum compliance with the new rules, he added.
