An environmental group says there is a new spill on an oil well run by Italian firm Eni SpA in Nigeria’s oil-rich southern delta.
Environmental Rights Action said Sunday the spill is happening at a well head run by Eni’s Nigerian subsidiary in the Ikebere community of Bayelsa. That’s near a pipeline struck by militants last week and close to an offshore Chevron Corp. gas rig that remains ablaze after an apparent industrial accident Jan. 16.
A spokesman for the Rome-based oil company did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday.
Foreign oil firms have pumped crude out of Nigeria’s Niger Delta for more than 50 years. Despite the nation earning billions, those living in the delta remain poor in largely polluted lands.
