Top naval officers and ratings serving in the Niger Delta converged on Warri, Delta State, on Tuesday for a two-day seminar on how to enhance security in the region.
The security officers were also to discuss on the threat perception of the Niger Delta, security of information as well as barrack security, among other issues.
Declaring open the seminar, the Commanding Officer of NNS Delta, Warri, Navy Captain Samson Ojediran, said the seminar was organised to update the knowledge of the officers and the ratings on current security matters.
He reiterated that providing education and awareness on security remained one of the most effective means of protecting any organisation’s assets adding “this is much more crucial in view of our enormous responsibilities of policing Nigeria’s extensive territorial waters and protecting the nation’s maritime resources”.
The naval boss said updating the knowledge of security personnel would also assist in the protection of equipment entrusted in them noting that it was easy for ill educated personnel to compromise even the most sophisticated security arrangements.
“Thus, the need for a security awareness seminar like this is to educate personnel on potential security threats and how to deal with them in an effective way before they become actual security breaches,” he added.
