Minimum wage: workers ask governors to pay or resign

Acting Scribe of the umbrella Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Owei Lakemfa said in the northern city of Kaduna Wednesday that the congress would not spare any of the 36 state governors who fails to pay the minimum wage.

Mr. Lakemfa said governance in Nigeria is not by force, and that any governor who can not pay the stipulated wage should resign because they were not begged to serve in the first place.

The minimum wage, which is more than double the old one, has pitched state and federal governments against labour.

Most state governors said they would not be able to pay the wage and still carry out any development project, and predicated the payment on an increase in their allocated resources or removal of fuel subsidy.

Though a three-day warning strike over the strike was recently called off at the last minute, labour has threatened another strike if the pact it signed with the governments for the payment of the wage from 1 August is breached.
