Militants warn INEC, governors against rigging

For the second time in a week, militants in the Niger Delta have warned governors in the area not to impose any candidate on the electorate so as not to incur their wrath.

The militants, in a statement released to journalists in Port Harcourt on Thursday, also asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to be fair to all and work for the overall interest of Nigeria and its people.

The militants, who wrote under the aegis of Coalition of Niger Delta Forces, said that they would not hesitate to attack individuals and groups bent on derailing democracy for selfish interests.

Water Richard, who described himself as the commander of the militants, Ikiederi Richard and Priye Alabo, jointly signed the statement.

It said, We are determined to ensure that the will of the people prevails in this election and any attempt by any governor to foist their cronies on the people will be vehemently resisted for the interest of the generality of the people.

For this reason, we hereby warn those governors who are presenting their lackeys, as is the case in Rivers State, to withdraw them now and allow the choice of the people to prevail.

We want to make it clear that if any of the governors think that they have state power at their disposal to use and impose their cronies on the people, that we shall also use our might to deal with such persons.

If they (top government officials in power) think that they have people they set free from prison and thugs to use and rig the election in any part of the Niger Delta, we want to assure them that we are ready to resist them and allow the will of the people to prevail.

The group asked the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Maurice Iwu, to stop flagrant disobedience of court orders in respect of the forthcoming election and stop creating the impression that it was interested in edging out opposition to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.
