A key Nigeria militant Saturday called on oil companies to bring their headquarters to the Delta and start delayed liquefied-natural-gas projects as he finalized his disarmament.
At a disarmament ceremony, Prince H. Amaibi, formerly known under the pseudonym General Buster Rhymes, appealed for the start of the Brass project in Bayelsa State and of LNG Train 7 in Bonny Island, according to a copy of his speech.
“This will reduce unemployment and create jobs for youths in the region,” he said in the speech.
Militant attacks earlier this year have shut down 1 million barrels of oil output in the Niger Delta. But many gunmen have said they now regret the violence and want the companies to return to invest more. Plans to build Train 7, a new facility for US gas exports, have yet to get a final greenlight despite signed LNG sales contracts with the likes of BG Group PLC (BG.LN) as security among other issues still has to be considered.
Contacted over the phone, Amaibi confirmed he had given the speech. He also said he advises “the multinationals, oil and gas companies to bring their headquarters in Niger Delta.”
Amaibi is the second in command of Farah Dagogo. Dagogo is the leader of the Movement for the Emancipation in the Niger Delta in the eastern part of this region.
