MEND warns against attack on Ijaw

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta has called on President Umaru YarAdua to restrain the military from carrying out its planned attack on Ijaw communities.

The body, in an e-mail message in Warri, Delta State, said it had in its possession a document detailing plans to invade the communities.

MEND warned that it would regard any military action in the region as a breach of the term of its ceasefire agreement with the Federal Government.

According to the statement by Tamuno Godswill and Oyinye Alaebi, MEND said it was aware of clandestine meetings by the security agencies and the Presidency to decimate some Ijaw communities in the Niger Delta.
