Lufthansa to resume flights to Port Harcourt

German airline, Lufthansa, which suspended operations in Port Harcourt, capital of the South South Rivers State of Nigeria, in the wake of security threats in the Niger Delta region, is to resume international flight operations soon from the Port Harcourt International Airport.

A statement from Mr. Blessing Wikina, the Acting Chief Press Secretary to the Rivers State Governor, said the resumption of flights by the airline was a further pointer to the return of normalcy to the restive Niger Delta area.

According to Wikina, the airline will formally resume operations on 26 October, saying that the re-commencement of flight operations by the organization would provide a variety of options for investors and travellers using the Port Harcourt airport.

He described the decision of the airline to resume operation as a worthy second anniversary gift to Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, since the move would act as a confidence-building effort to the state.

PANA recalls that the airline shut down operations in the state following the challenges posed by criminal activities in the Niger Delta region such as kidnapping and militancy.
